 rofessionals Project\, National Children’s Advocacy Center\n\nLinda Cordis
co Steele\, Director\, Forensic Interviewing Training and Services\, Natio
nal Children’s Advocacy Center\n\nSummary: Children and teens engage in s
exual behaviors that range from developmentally expected to problematic an
d harmful. However\, many professionals often misinterpret normative beha
viors and are also unequipped to effectively address genuine problematic s
exual behaviors (PSB) in the investigative process or intervention. Foren
sic Interviewers could (and typically do) experience challenges when inter
viewing children and teens who initiated an alleged PSB\, such as when a y
outh provides self-incriminating information about their sexual behavior w
ith other children. There is little guidance for Forensic Interviewers re
garding these cases. Sadly\, many children and teens with problematic sex
ual behavior do not receive the types of services that support a helpful m
ultidisciplinary team response or healthy behavioral functioning and famil
y healing. This workshop will provide information to help forensic intervi
ewers distinguish normative from problematic sexual behavior in children a
nd teens\, identify potential contributing factors to the behavior\, dispe
l common misconceptions about these behaviors and children and teens\, and
have a more robust and evidence-informed response to these cases. \n\nLe
arning Objectives:\n1. Participants will be able to apply a framework to
distinguish normative from problematic sexual behaviors in children and
teens. \n\n2. Participants will learn research-based information to dis
pel common persistent and adverse myths that impact professional response
to cases of children and teens with problematic sexual behaviors.\n\n3. P
articipants will be able to identify at least two strategies to enhance pr
ofessional response to cases of children and teens with problematic sexual
  behavior. \n\n
